Vale Death
Nickel Belt's MP Claude Gravelle and Sudbury's MP Glenn Thibeault are expressing their condolences to the family of Stephen Perry the miner who died on Sunday at the Coleman Mine in Levack..Gravelle a former mine employee says he knows firsthand how dangerous it is to work underground..both offer their prayers to the victims's family friend and co workers..Greater Sudbury Police, the ministry of labour, Vale and the Steelworkers are investigating the circumstances of the accident. Vale's five mines in Sudbury have temporarily suspended all operations. All 1550 miners are off the job, with pay, until Vale managers meet with the joint health and safety committee to put together an action plan. A memorial mass will be held in Sudbury at Christ the King Church for Perry who was 47..there will be no public visitation by friends may gather at the Church at 9:45am.
Police Get Their Man
OPP say they have arrested bail jumper Jeffery Youmans..who was serving a five year sentence of manslaughter in the death of a Sudbury panhandler..Youmans simply walked away from a Toronto half way house ..OPP issued a Canada Wide Warrant for him..and a the time thought he might be headed for Sudbury...tips from the public indicated Youmans was still in the Toronto area and he turned himself into Toronto police on Sunday without incident..
SISU Campaign
The SISU Assisted Lliving Campagn is halfway there...the fundraising capaign speaheaded by chair Gerry Laugheed Jr. has raised 1.5 million in just over 6 months...the announcement made this morning at Finlandia Village..October of this year is the slated opening of the residence..
Drug Bust in Gogama
A routine traffic stop near Gogama ended up being more than the OPP expected. OPP found more than 70-thousand dollars in cash along with a quantity of beer in the vehicle. A 26 year old man from Moosonee and a 25 year old Sudbury man, were arrested and have been charged with possession of property obtained by crime. Both men are to appear in Provincial Court on March 20th.
Sewage Lift Station Maintenance in Azilda
There will be increased truck traffic over the next three weeks at sewage lift stations in Azilda..as construction activities for replacement of equipment and maintenance will be taking place the stations on Landry Street, Marier Street and Montee' Principale..sewage services will not be affected ..tanker trucks will carry water flows from the stations being worked on to a lift station on Laurier Street for disposal..
Cambrian College Selling Residence
Cambrian College's Board of Governors has approved the 24-million dollar sale of its' Barrydowne campus residence to a private company. Cambrian will lease the land and Campus Living Centres of Toronto along with Cambrian will determine what the residence rates will be along with what other services will be offered to the students. This deal means that new development will begin on the north end of the college, which also means there will be more rooms for students.
Cookies May Contain Nuts
People with allergies to nuts are being warned by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency not to eat certain cookies sold across the country at Walmart stores..Original Gourmet Passion Cookies contain hazelnuts and may contain other nuts, but don't say so on the label..the agency says one reaction has been reported..
Relay for Life
It's that time of year again and the organizers of Sudbury's Relay for Life want you to start thinking about the walk happening on June 1st at Cambrian College. This year's theme is "Picture your World Without Cancer". Supporters can purchase a luminary bag for 5 dollars, decorate it however they choose and these will line the track the night of the walk. Roads
A traffic note for tomorrow... there will be two wide load escorts and some roads will be closed for periods of time between the hours of 9:30a-11:30 and then again between 1 and 3p in the afternoon.......industrial equipment will be moved from Lopes Mechanical, on Smelter Rd., to the Xstrata plant in Falconbridge. the streets that will be affected will be Smelter road, Edward street, Second Avenue to Hwy 17, the Garson Coniston Road to the Falconbridge highway....
