Radio For Radiology
KICX 106 and 104.1 The DOCK are pledging $500,000 to support the new Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre (SMRCC). The "Radio for Radiology Campaign" will raise funds that will go towards the purchase of a new Interventional Radiology Machine (IR machine). This highly specialized machine permits doctors to perform procedures by making tiny incisions to help treat cancer. Not only are IR procedures typically less expensive than surgery, patients return to normal activities much faster and the risks, pain and recovery are significantly reduced.
There is currently only one IR machine in Central Ontario at RVH. Despite the fact that it is used 24/7, it cannot meet the demand. The addition of a new IR machine in the new SMRCC will allow people in Orillia, Midland, Barrie and all of Simcoe County to get treatment close to home, instead of the current situation, which sees many patients experiencing the additional cost, wait and disruption of going to Toronto for treatment. The reality is that most of us, or a loved one, will have to deal with cancer in our lives. It's a very stressful time. It's critical that residents in our region have the best, most convenient and timely care available. With help from our many listeners and clients, the funding of a new IR Unit for the new SMRCC will do precisely that.
Interventional Radiology Machine
The new Regional Cancer Centre will be adding two new IR Machines to their Radiology department. Currently, there is only one unit in Central Ontario, which cannot meet the demand. This results in patients going to Toronto for care. The addition of these units will keep our residents closer to home during this stressful time.
Radiology (IR) procedures are alternatives to more invasive surgical procedures. These procedures are performed through a tiny incision, often the size of the tip of a pen, through which small catheters, wires, and other instruments are passed under xray guidance to the area of interest within the body. Most IR procedures require only local anesthesia and light sedation rather than general anesthesia that is required for conventional surgery. This allows the patient to go home the same day or the day after the procedure. Patients return to normal activities much faster than with conventional surgery.
What Are The Advantages Of Interventional Radiology Procedures?
• The risks, pain and recovery time of treatments performed through interventional radiology procedures are less than that of open surgery. • Most procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require a shortened hospital stay. • General anesthesia is usually not required. • Procedures can be less expensive than surgery.
How can IR help Cancer patients? Chemoembolization: It delivers a very high concentration of chemotherapy directly into the tumor, without exposing the entire body to the effects of those drugs. Second, the procedure cuts off blood supply to the tumor, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients, and trapping the drugs at the tumor site to enable them to be more effective. Radiofrequency Ablation: A special needle electrode is placed in the tumor. A radiofrequency current then is passed through the electrode to heat the tumor tissue near the needle tip and ablate - or eliminate - it. The heat from radiofrequency energy also closes up small blood vessels, thereby minimizing the risk of bleeding. In general, radiofrequency ablation causes only minimal discomfort and may be done as an outpatient procedure without general anesthesia.
Your Help In conjunction with our listeners and our advertisers, both The DOCK and KICX 106 will conduct several fund raising initiatives over the next few years. There will be major annual events, along with many smaller events that will be ongoing. This is all possible through your help. Please donate.
